Bupa’s experience with Careers International and the RNs they provided to the business.

During my six years with Bupa I had responsibility for workforce planning, recruitment, retention and development strategies.

It was evident that the support being provided by Allan and his team, not just during the recruitment and settlement period but on a long term basis to support the performance and development of their nurses, was a significant factor in ensuring their success.  No other recruitment provider I have come across – before or since – has provided this level of support.  Allan and his team care deeply about the success of their nurses, not only from a commercial perspective but also from a personal perspective.  They only put forward nurses who they are confident will succeed within the Australian aged care sector and they work closely with the nurse and the recruiting line managers to ensure an effective induction and ongoing standards of performance.

Nursing Recruitment

As a result of this, Careers International became our preferred provider for RN recruitment services and we ceased using other providers for RN recruitment (domestic or international).  During 2011 we engaged 70+ overseas RNs, some sourced by Careers International and some sourced direct by Bupa with Careers International supporting the visa management and induction period.  When I left Bupa in December, overseas RNs represented 33% of all RN hours worked and represented 25% of our Care Manager population.  RN agency usage was less than 0.5% and we had no RN vacancies and a candidate pool of RNs seeking opportunities with Bupa. Overall RN retention improved by 34% and the Careers International retention rate remained above 85%.

I would strongly recommend overseas nurse recruitment with an effective partner like Careers International as being a critical part of any aged care providers’ long term workforce planning strategy, in addition to graduate programs, comprehensive RN induction and development strategies and talent management programs.  I will be recommending Careers International’s services to my aged care clients in future.
